POPIA UPDATE – REGISTRATIONS EXTENDED

With only 6 days before the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) comes into full effect, registration for compliance officers and obtaining prior authorisation for processing of personal information have been nearly impossible as the registration portal has experienced numerous technical glitches and malfunctions.  This has left businesses and “responsible parties” anxious and fearing prosecution due to non-compliance. Configurations are currently underway as the system was simply just not prepared for the influx of registrations.

Applications in terms of Section 57(1) as well as Section 58(2) has, as a result of the system malfunctions, been extended by the Regulator to the 1st of February 2022.

The POPI Act will still become enforceable on the 1st of July 2021 but for the provision above however no responsible party and/or compliance officer will be held responsible for not registering by the 30th of June 2021. We therefore urge all our clients to ensure that they are compliant by the deadline!
